What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is an Internet based marketing practice where people (called affiliates) promote products for other companies and get paid a commission for it.

Typically, the promotional efforts made by affiliates are completely online, and web traffic is driven to the product link on the vendors website.  For affiliate marketing to be effective, web traffic is usually highly targeted.

Before you go running around to become an affiliate, make sure that the vendor has an affiliate program, and that the program is properly managed with automated software.  You should be able to log into the vendors website (as an affiliate), and see the amount of traffic you are driving, as well as the number of conversions (sales), and the dollars involved.

There are many ways to run an effective Internet marketing business, and affiliate marketing allows you to get involved with little or no cost.  You do not need to build any websites, you don’t need to buy domains.  It is free to sign up as an affiliate in most scenarios, and you can get started today.  I caution you not to get discouraged, there is a learning curve and it is going to take effort on your part.  I’m just being real here – there is a sea of affiliates out there that don’t make any money and I don’t want you to be one of them.
